About The Symposium

The 2004 William E. Colby Military Writers Symposium
The New Face of War
April 7-9 , 2004
Norwich University

As a new generation of citizens take arms to protect interests at home and abroad, our society continues to adjust to the challenges of keeping our homeland secure, protecting our way of life and combating an unconventional enemy. At the heart of these economic and social challenges, our force size and strength is being tested beyond measure as we take our technologically superior force and put it against an enemy who has lived in fear…fought centuries of oppression…and exists in a society that has never experienced democracy or peace.

The New Face of War was the theme of the 9th annual William E. Colby Military Writers' Symposium to be held on the campus of Norwich University April 7 through 9, 2004. Joining co-founders W.E.B. Griffin (Retreat, Hell!) and Carlo D'Este (Eisenhower: A Soldier's Life) for in-class and special sessions, book signings, the public session and Meet the Authors dinner were: Joseph L. Galloway (We Were Soldiers Once.and Young ); H.R. McMaster (Dereliction of Duty ) ; Geoffrey Perret (Lincoln's War ); Williamson Murray (The Iraq War: A Military History ); Robert Clasby (Gettysburg: You Are There). Also in attendance were the 2004 Colby Award recipients Bing West and Major General Ray L. Smith USMC (Ret.) (The March Up: Taking Baghdad with the 1 st Marine Division) and Robert Bateman (NO GUN RI: A Military History of the Korean War Incident).
